A two-fold approach

We are currently embarked on a two-fold approach to reduce our environmental footprint:

  1. To ensure that our current operations and the operations of our suppliers are environmentally friendly as possible.
  2. To search for economically feasible ways to improve the sustainability of our product.

Reducing our carbon footprint

Sealy Canada has 'domesticated' our supply chain... Sealy Canada purchases most of its raw materials from North American suppliers. In doing so, Sealy is reducing our 'Carbon Footprint'.

We recognize imported products must be shipped over vast distances, through various methods of transportation, increasing carbon emissions unnecessarily. In addition, many of the world's manufacturing centers have very low standards for the sustainability of our environment.

Consciously reducing our impact

Here's why Sealy is considered the bedding industry leader in the promotion of environmental sustainability.

  1. Lumber Our supply partners have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 10% since 2000, reduced energy consumption by 8% since 2003 and Woodlands are 100% certified ISO 14001. Sealy's lumber resource is certified to CSA (Canadian Standard Association) standards.
  2. Steel 100% of the steel products in Sealy sleep systems are derived from recycled supply.
  3. Comfort Materials Sealy recycles 100% of its polyurethane scrap for use in the production of other consumer products. (i.e. carpet underlay) and Sealy's insulator pads are made from 100% recycled textiles.

Lean manufacturing

Sealy has been using Lean Manufacturing methods since 2004. Lean manufacturing is the production of goods using less of everything compared to common mass production practices. Specific Sealy initiatives as they relate to Lean Manufacturing include:

  1. Scrap Reduction - Sealy has reduced its scrap per piece produced by 64%.
  2. Recycling - 100% of manufacturing scrap in Sealy plants is recycled for other products. Scrap includes textiles, foams, plastics.
  3. Logistics - Sealy uses a computerized route optimization software system that optimizes the transportation of their trucks to minimize fuel use.
    1. Sealy has consolidated transportation in North America where appropriate.
    2. Sealy has selected suppliers based on their proximity to Sealy manufacturing and components plants.
